Haute Maurienne Vanoise's tourism strategy

Haute Maurienne Vanoise has defined an ambitious tourism strategy for the decade 2020, built around five major axes designed to combine sustainability, innovation and competitiveness.

1. Structure and enhance a range of unique, unforgettable experiences
The aim is to develop distinctive, environmentally-friendly activities that highlight the region's mountain identity. This includes the creation of new facilities and the staging of experiences that are both modern and authentic, in both summer and winter, to attract a clientele in search of something new.

2.Upgrade and revitalize leisure real estate
This priority aims to improve the quality and diversity of tourist accommodation, by encouraging the renovation of second homes and supporting owners in marketing their properties. The aim is to increase occupancy rates while reducing the carbon footprint associated with accommodation.

3.Organize and promote fluid, renewed mobility
The strategy focuses on the development of sustainable transport solutions, making it easier to travel without a private car. This includes improving infrastructure for soft mobility, setting up efficient public transport services and promoting ecomobility among visitors and residents.

4.Promote and market the Haute Maurienne Vanoise destination
The aim is to enhance the attractiveness of the region by highlighting its natural and cultural assets, while adopting a responsible marketing approach. The strategy aims to attract customers who are sensitive to environmental issues, by promoting the image of an authentic destination committed to sustainable development.

5.Steer the Haute Maurienne Vanoise destination
This involves setting up effective, shared governance, involving all local players in tourism management and development. The aim is to coordinate actions, support the transition to a more sustainable model and ensure that the initiatives taken meet the objectives set.

This strategy is part of a long-term vision, Vision Tourisme 2030, drawn up in 2021 during the 1st Assises du Tourisme. It reflects Haute Maurienne Vanoise's determination to position itself as a benchmark mountain destination, combining respect for the environment, innovation and quality of welcome.

Tourism: the region's main activity

Tourism plays a key role in the Haute Maurienne Vanoise economy. More than 85% of the area's income comes directly or indirectly from tourism:
- Directly: accommodation, hotels, activity providers (including ski lifts, with skiing being the main source of income and development for the area) and catering.
- Indirectly: a large proportion of commercial, agricultural, service and construction activities depend on tourism.

Skiing, multi-activities and sustainable development

Haute Maurienne Vanoise is a multi-season destination: 1/3 of overnight stays are recorded in summer (2/3 in winter). However, skiing remains the driving force behind the region's tourism activity.

Without mountain resorts and tourism, Haute Maurienne Vanoise would be much less populated and offer far fewer services. In fact, ski resorts were created in the area in the second half of the 20th century by local residents, with the aim of creating local employment following the decline of the secondary sector.

In addition to skiing in winter and hiking in summer, the Haute Maurienne Vanoise resorts have always offered a multitude of activities: sledging, dog sledding, snowshoeing, ski touring, ice climbing, mountaineering, via ferrata, mountain biking, cycling, wellness, fishing... They also offer a rich heritage, a lively and inhabited territory all year round, as well as large preserved natural areas. All assets that perfectly match the expectations of 21st-century customers.
